It creates an emotional connection with the landscapes and invites you to become a part of the journey.
In the heart of New Zealand, where the land of the long white cloud meets the festive season, fine art landscape photographer Stephen Milner embarked on a captivating journey. Over several days, he delved into the coastal landscapes along the east coast of Auckland, seeking the iconic Pōhutukawa tree adorned with red blossoms, a symbol of Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere.
The first destination unfolded on a golden sand beach near Auckland's North Shore towns of Davenport and Takapuna. Two Pōhutukawa trees stood proudly, casting natural shadows that framed a breathtaking view of Hauraki Gulf. The white sails of small sailboats added a maritime touch to the scene. Capturing this moment proved challenging, with significant light contrast and a bustling beach setting, but the result, named "Auckland's Christmas Canvas: Pōhutukawa Symphony," is a testament to the beauty of New Zealand's coastal traditions.
Further north on the Pacific East coast near Orewa and Warkworth, Milner found a serene hilltop near Mahurangi Regional Park. Overlooking Mahurangi Harbour, a single, towering Pōhutukawa tree commanded attention. The artwork "Harbour of Tranquility: Pōhutukawa Bloom at Mahurangi" captures the essence of summer with red blossoms, turquoise waters, and sailboats dotting the harbor. Patience and persistence paid off, as Milner navigated through challenging weather conditions to create a panoramic masterpiece.
These artworks, resonating with the festive spirit, encapsulate the joy of family Christmas holidays around Auckland, offering viewers a moment of calm and inspiration.

Each photograph becomes a visual poem, conveying the unique character of New Zealand, inviting viewers to feel the land's heartbeat and sense its timeless allure.
City of Dawn: Auckland's Majestic Awakening
While near Auckland, Milner explored the city and marinas, aiming to capture the essence of New Zealand's largest city. The resulting artwork, "City of Dawn: Auckland's Majestic Awakening," portrays the city skyline, with the iconic SkyCity tower standing tall. The sunrise hues, calm waters, and the inclusion of a sailboat add elegance to the panorama. Overcoming challenges posed by Auckland's notorious wind conditions, Milner's lens painted a vivid reflection of the city awakening to a new day.

]]>In the world of interior design, there is an extraordinary opportunity to merge the realms of design and art, creating captivating spaces that leave a lasting impression. The concept of designing with artistic collaboration has emerged as a powerful approach, where designers and artists join forces to craft extraordinary environments that seamlessly integrate design and artistry.
This article delves into the significance of bridging the gap between design and artistry, exploring how collaborative efforts can unlock the true potential of interior spaces. By combining the expertise of designers and artists, a new level of creativity, innovation, and visual storytelling can be achieved.
Throughout this article, it will delve into the transformative power of artistic collaboration, uncovering the ways in which it elevates the aesthetic appeal, depth, and emotional resonance of interior designs. It will showcase inspiring examples, provide practical insights, and highlight the importance of effective communication and understanding between designers and artists.
Lets explore the magic that happens when design and art intertwine, discovering how designing with artistic collaboration can unlock captivating spaces and seamlessly integrate design and artistry for an unforgettable sensory experience.
When designers and artists join forces, a remarkable synergy emerges, giving rise to a truly powerful creative process. The benefits of collaboration between these two artistic worlds extend far beyond the realms of individual expertise, profoundly impacting the overall design aesthetic and bringing forth unique perspectives that ignite the imagination.
In this section, we delve into the transformative power of collaboration, highlighting the advantages that arise when designers and artists unite their talents. By leveraging their respective skills, knowledge, and creative vision, designers and artists can unlock a multitude of benefits that elevate the final design outcome.
Firstly, collaboration fosters a dynamic exchange of ideas and inspiration. Designers bring their expertise in spatial planning, functionality, and user experience, while artists infuse their unique artistic expressions, storytelling abilities, and mastery of visual elements. This dynamic fusion allows for the creation of designs that not only captivate the eye but also resonate with deep emotional connections.
Additionally, the collaboration between designers and artists expands the boundaries of creativity and pushes the limits of what is possible. Designers gain fresh perspectives and out-of-the-box thinking from artists, encouraging them to explore innovative design solutions and unconventional approaches. Artists, on the other hand, benefit from the structure and practical considerations brought by designers, enabling them to channel their creativity in ways that are both aesthetically pleasing and functionally viable.
Moreover, the combined efforts of designers and artists result in a harmonious integration of form and meaning. The expertise of designers in understanding user needs and creating functional spaces complements the artistic sensibilities of artists, allowing for the creation of designs that not only look visually stunning but also serve a purpose and evoke powerful emotions.
Ultimately, the power of collaboration lies in its ability to transcend individual limitations and foster a collective vision that is greater than the sum of its parts. By embracing collaboration, designers and artists unite their talents to create designs that are truly extraordinary, captivating the senses and leaving a lasting impact on those who experience them.
Collaborative design between designers and artists holds immense potential for creating groundbreaking and awe-inspiring creations. However, it is not without its fair share of challenges. In this section, we will address common hurdles faced in collaborative design and provide valuable insights and tips to help overcome these obstacles, fostering effective communication, understanding artistic visions, and finding common ground.
One of the primary challenges faced in collaborative design is the difference in language and terminology between designers and artists. Designers may rely on technical jargon and industry-specific terms, while artists may express themselves through abstract concepts and visual language. Bridging this gap requires open and transparent communication. Both parties must actively listen, ask questions, and clarify any uncertainties to ensure a shared understanding of goals, expectations, and project requirements.
Another challenge lies in aligning artistic visions. Designers and artists may have different approaches to creativity, aesthetics, and interpretation. It is crucial to create a space where ideas can be freely exchanged, encouraging a mutual exploration of possibilities. By embracing a mindset of openness and collaboration, designers and artists can discover new perspectives, challenge conventional thinking, and fuse their visions to create something truly remarkable.
Finding common ground is essential to successful collaboration. This involves recognising and respecting the expertise and strengths of both designers and artists. Designers bring their knowledge of functionality, spatial planning, and user experience, while artists infuse their artistic expressions, storytelling abilities, and visual mastery. By embracing the unique contributions of each discipline, a balanced and harmonious fusion can be achieved, resulting in designs that are both aesthetically captivating and functionally sound.
Effective collaboration also requires a willingness to embrace experimentation and embrace constructive feedback. Designers and artists should create an environment that encourages risk-taking and iteration, where ideas can be refined and improved upon. This iterative process allows for the exploration of new creative territories and the discovery of innovative solutions that may have otherwise been overlooked.
Finally, fostering a culture of mutual respect and trust is essential in overcoming challenges in collaborative design. Both designers and artists bring valuable expertise and perspectives to the table. By recognising and appreciating each other's contributions, a strong foundation is built for successful collaboration. Encouraging an environment of open dialogue, constructive critique, and shared ownership of the project will enable designers and artists to navigate challenges with a sense of unity and purpose.
Collaborative artwork has the remarkable ability to transcend the boundaries of traditional interior design, elevating the atmosphere of spaces to new heights. In this section, we will explore the profound impact of collaborative artwork and how it adds depth, emotion, and personality to designs, creating an unforgettable and immersive experience for occupants.
Art has long been celebrated for its transformative power in shaping the ambiance of a space. When designers and artists collaborate, their joint efforts create a harmonious interplay between form, function, and artistic expression. The result is an atmosphere that goes beyond mere aesthetics, evoking emotions, stimulating thought, and connecting with the essence of the space.
Collaborative artwork adds a layer of depth to interior designs, turning them into immersive environments that captivate the senses. It serves as a visual narrative, inviting viewers to embark on a journey of discovery and interpretation. Through carefully curated pieces that resonate with the design concept, collaborative artwork has the ability to transport occupants to different realms, evoke memories, and create a sense of wonder.
Moreover, collaborative artwork infuses spaces with emotions, breathing life and energy into every corner. Artists bring their unique perspectives and creative interpretations, imbuing the artwork with their own experiences, emotions, and storytelling. This emotional resonance extends to the viewers, who are deeply moved and inspired by the artwork's presence. Whether it's a serene landscape that instills tranquility or a vibrant abstract piece that sparks joy, collaborative artwork has the power to evoke a wide range of emotions and enrich the overall atmosphere.
In addition to depth and emotion, collaborative artwork also injects personality into designs, making spaces truly one-of-a-kind. Each artwork carries the distinct voice and vision of the artist, contributing to the overall character and identity of the space. It creates a dialogue between the design elements and the artwork, fostering a cohesive and curated environment that reflects the unique essence of its occupants.
When collaborative artwork takes centre stage in interiors, it transforms spaces into memorable experiences. The integration of art into design creates a harmonious fusion that engages occupants on a multi-sensory level, leaving a lasting impression. Whether it's a grand statement piece or a carefully curated collection, collaborative artwork has the power to enhance the atmosphere, tell stories, and evoke emotions, elevating interior designs to extraordinary heights.
Collaboration between designers and artists is a dynamic process that can yield extraordinary results. To foster a successful partnership and bring out the best in each other's creative abilities, it is crucial to follow some essential tips for effective collaboration. In this section, we will explore practical advice and strategies that can enhance the collaboration between designers and artists, ensuring a harmonious and productive working relationship.
1. Open Communication: Clear and open communication is the foundation of any successful collaboration. Designers and artists should establish regular channels of communication to discuss ideas, share inspirations, and address any concerns or challenges that may arise. Emphasise the importance of active listening and expressing thoughts and feedback openly, fostering an environment of trust and mutual understanding.
2. Understand Each Other's Expertise: Designers and artists bring unique perspectives and skill sets to the collaboration. Take the time to familiarise yourself with each other's expertise, strengths, and creative processes. This understanding will allow for better synergy and the ability to leverage each other's talents effectively.
3. Respect and Value Diverse Perspectives: Collaboration thrives when different perspectives are respected and valued. Designers and artists should embrace the diversity of ideas and approaches, recognising that the fusion of different perspectives can lead to innovative and exciting outcomes. Encourage an atmosphere of inclusivity, where everyone feels comfortable sharing their viewpoints and contributing to the project.
4. Set Clear Goals and Expectations: Before embarking on a collaborative project, establish clear goals, objectives, and expectations. Define the scope of the project, desired outcomes, and any specific requirements or constraints. This clarity will help align the creative vision and ensure that both designers and artists are working towards a shared goal.
5. Embrace Flexibility and Adaptability: Collaboration involves a degree of flexibility and adaptability. Designers and artists should be open to revisiting and refining ideas, accommodating each other's suggestions, and embracing new possibilities that emerge throughout the creative process. By remaining flexible, you can explore uncharted territories and push the boundaries of creativity.
6. Emphasise Mutual Inspiration: Collaboration should be a source of mutual inspiration for both designers and artists. Encourage a constant exchange of ideas, inspirations, and references. Explore each other's work, learn from one another, and find ways to infuse the project with a shared creative energy that fuels the collaboration.
7. Document the Process: Keeping a record of the collaborative process can be valuable for reference and reflection. Document milestones, decisions, and key moments to create a timeline of the project's evolution. This documentation can serve as a source of inspiration and learning for future collaborations.
8. Embrace Constructive Feedback: Feedback is essential for growth and improvement. Designers and artists should be open to giving and receiving constructive feedback throughout the collaboration. In todays blog, I will be sharing with you my top eleven tips on how to photograph Autumn (or Fall) landscapes to get the best photos you can.
And at the end of this blog, I will be tell you about my New Zealand Autumn photography tour in 2023 and 2024, I will tell you bout my new Autumn Collection of ready to hang artwork that has just launched, and I will tell you about my new film photography book Volcanic Aotearoa New Zealand.
So, let’s gets started some tips on how you can get the best out of your photography this Autumn.
This is is relevant for all landscape photography. Take advantage of the warm sunlight when it shines over the landscape at a low angle, it will make the landscape appear vibrant, and especially where there is already vibrant autumn colours. The low angle of the sun will create beautiful micro contrast in the landscape, especially if the direction of the sun is from the side or behind you.
Keep en eye on the sunset and sunrise times and watch out for other elements in the landscape that may cause unwanted shadows in the landscape. Keep an eye on the weather and plan when you will be doing your autumn photography.
Autumn isn’t a season where you can expect sunshine every day. Don’t be afraid to photograph your autumn landscape when it is foggy or overcast. Fog does a wonderful job of diffusing the light. It will soften the landscape and create a painterly effect to your photos.
Overcast days make Autumn photography possible all day long because the clouds will diffuse the light. Diffused light is great for those telephoto abstract photos. If you are using your wide angle lens, be patient and time your photos to when there is direct sunlight on the autumn trees. This will add some nice mood to your photos.
If you are using a wide angle lens, have a think about what you want the primary focus of your photo to be. Wide angle lenses are awesome for emphasising the foreground or sky. Try to compose your landscapes with other elements like rivers, waterfalls, paths that are surrounded by autumn colours. This approach will help create a feel of human connection to your photos.
Don’t just think wide and big. Try using a telephoto lens, pick out some intricate elements of your Autumn landscape and try to create some abstract photography. Use colour carefully in these type of photos and look for patterns. Contrast is also important, look for contrast in textures, colours, tones. Experiment with your aperture settings to create contrast in sharpness and softness. This can be a nice technique to emphasis the important elements in your photos.
When you are exploring your autumn landscape, look for other elements in the landscape that contrast the warm autumn colours. Priorities photographing your landscapes when the light is on the Autumn tree, and allow the surrounding landscape to be in shade. Shade areas will naturally have a blue hue and this will contrast nicely with the warm yellow autumn colours.
Learn to work with the weather conditions that you have and be patient. Keep an eye on the the autumn colours and try to photograph them when they are at their best. However, don’t be afraid of photographing autumn trees at the start of autumn when the leaves start to change and have different colours, and at the end of autumn when the leaves are brown.
While autumn colours are wonderful, they can be even more stunning when combined with the right light. For instance, a small patch of sunlight on a carefully placed patch of Autumn trees, or dappled light hitting a sea of yellow trees. This will create some mood in the landscape and is often the difference between a good image and a great image.
Unfortunately, the light rarely does what you want exactly and when you want, so if you find a beautiful composition, be ready to wait for the perfect light.
Try using the natural forms of the autumn trees and other elements of the surrounding landscape to create unique compositions by using their form to frame elements in the landscape. Look for branches, leaves, trees or other natural elements that can frame your main subject. Doing so will help emphasise the main subject of your image and you will have a beautiful and interesting frame around it.
The Circular Polariser is your best friend for autumn photography, regardless of whether you’re photographing abstract or expansive scenes. There are several benefits of using one, but here are the most important:
When you are editing you photos, keep in mind that your camera system may not automatically set its best colour profile for Autumn colours. Manually adjust your white balance during editing to reduce blue and boost yellow. This will compliment the autumn colours and give your photos a warmth feel.
I have already mentioned that opposite colours work well with each other. When you are editing your photos, apply a colour grade that emphasises the autumn feel. Boost the warmth of your photos with a yellow colour grade. And to contrast the yellow, add a subtle blue colour grade to the shadow areas.
If you can, try to explore areas that have seen less foot traffic. This will give you the best opportunity to create something unique. And, when you find it, let you creativity run wild. Try to create a collection of photos that tell a story of your autumnal experience.
Volcanic Aotearoa New Zealand tells Māori legend stories of love and war between New Zealand’s volcanoes, it is a story of how I faced my fear of volcanic activity, and it shows my journey with film photography since 2019. All the photos in my book were made using medium format film cameras, the Mamiya 7, the Mamiya 6 and Hasselblad 503CW.

A New Zealand Landscape Photographer Story
My connection with the landscape started at an early age. When I was a young boy, my brothers and I would spend every minute we had exploring the landscape around our home. Every day, we created new ways to relive our adventures. We enjoyed exploring somewhere new and building makeshift bush huts; our adventures were creative. My creativity is a passion true to my spirit and influenced me from an early age, through my education and into my adult life. My passion for exploration is the ember burning in my heart, and I always look forward to starting a new adventure.
“My creativity is a passion that is true to my spirit and has influenced me from an early age.”
In 2020, I had a life-changing back injury. Two surgeries later, I have had to walk away from my previous career as a construction project specialist. Despite the impact of this injury on my life and family, I see it as an opportunity to turn my landscape photography into my new career. You see, the thing is, the outdoors and walking is the best thing for my injury. So, this year I decided to kickstart my new career by joining a group of inspiring people called Creative Waikato on its Elevate programme. The Elevate programme gives artists like me the tools we need to build a sustainable creative career.
My Journey With Photography
My creativity turned to photography in 2012 when I picked up my first camera at a university in the UK. As a confident self-learner, I quickly found ways to improve my photography. My camera has been with me on every adventure since 2012. My photography has taken me on a creative journey. It has been a journey that has taken me on many adventures to wonderful places. Over the last ten years, I have crafted my mind's eye into something unique to me, and I feel very fortunate that I have my camera to share how I see the landscape with you.
In 2013, my family became New Zealand residents, and in 2020 we became proud citizens. New Zealand is a beautifully diverse country, and I love exploring it with my camera. When I explore the landscape, my mind's eye will abstract the landscape, and I use my camera to create a piece of art. My photography builds on your ancestral DNA connection with the landscape. My photography inspires, excites, uplifts, and calms.
I am an award-winning photographer whose goal is to become a New Zealand Photographer with a difference. Since 2012, my mind's eye has developed to create visionary photography. This is more than simply recording a landscape. It is essentially the art of using a camera to create collections of photos with a common theme that tell a story.
“I empower my photography by using familiar forms and tones that add atmosphere to my work.”
The Land of the Long White Cloud
Our beautiful Aotearoa is the land of the long white cloud. Aotearoa is New Zealand; it is the Maori name for the North Island and is now adopted as the official Maori name for the whole country. Aotearoa means long white cloud. The cloud formations from the volcanic activity in New Zealand were used to navigate to the land by early Maori settlers in about the fourteenth century.
Volcanic activity has been part of the culture of Aotearoa since its early settlers, and it continues today. Volcanic activity is known worldwide for its destructive effects on the landscape and people. However, in Aotearoa, it is part of life. Volcanic activity is part of Maori legends of love and war; and how the land country was formed. The geothermal effect of volcanic activity is used as a heating source in their villages and for cooking and bathing. These benefits became a tourism industry that started in the 1800s and still exists today.
When I arrived in Aotearoa in 2014 for the first time, I feared its volcanic activity because I did not understand it.
However, this soon became a passion after I completed the Tongariro Alpine Crossing for the first time in 2015. In 2018 I started visiting the area more often to photograph it. This fascination expanded to other volcanic locations and geothermal parks and became a project to which I dedicated myself. The explosion of White Island in 2019 reminded everyone of the powerful destructive capabilities of volcanic activity. Unfortunately, there were 22 deaths from 47 visitors that day, and the island remains closed because of ongoing activity and safety concerns.
Whilst my first fears of volcanic activity were realised in the unfortunate events of 2019, when I visit Aotearoa's volcanic landscape, I feel alive and connected to them. I enjoy exploring wide-open landscapes and connecting elements in the landscape with my photography. These locations are remarkable in many ways. I felt compelled to capture them in different ways to create a body of work with a cohesive feel that tells a story of their beauty and why they are important to New Zealand.
My Volcanic Aotearoa Project
Volcanic activity is known for its destructive effects on the landscape and people. Volcanic Aotearoa is a photography project that captures New Zealand's volcanic landscape's beauty, colours and organic shapes. It is a collection of photos that encapsulates a three-year study of New Zealand’s volcanic and geothermal National Parks, Conservation Areas and one World Heritage Site.
The Volcanic Aotearoa collection of images has always intended to shine a light on the power and beauty of New Zealand's volcanic landscape.
The volcanic activity has been part of the culture of Aotearoa since early settlers, and it continues today. My book is not only a dedication to volcanic New Zealand, but it is also a dedication to film photography.
In 2019 I decided to start using medium format analogue film for the project. All the photos were taken with film using three different film cameras; the Mamiya 7, the Hasselblad 503CW, and the Mamiya 6. PCL Imaging in Auckland developed all the photos in my book, and I digitalised them using a flatbed scanner.
I have enjoyed using film for this project; it has taught me many things. Film photography has its ways of shining a light on my technical and creative strengths and weaknesses. I have learnt to appreciate the value of a single photo. Film photography requires patience and perseverance to create compelling imagery. It has taught me things that modern-day digital cameras automate. I am grateful that film still exists for its teachings. I find that my digital work is better because of film photography because I create more portfolio-worthy photos.
Volcanic Aotearoa is a beautifully crafted 285x285mm case-bound hardcover book with over 100 pages of photos, GeoNet information and Maori legend stories with the forward by Bruce Percy as follows:
“If I were to say the word ‘volcano’ to you, I am confident that you would instantly ‘see’ a cone shape in your mind’s eye. The shape of any volcano is instantly recognisable to all of us. They have one of the most iconic shapes of our world.
In Stephen's images, he has settled upon using this iconic shape to unify his imagery. He understands that using form in this way can strengthen the work. For when we break down any image at all, they are constructed of the same basic building blocks of form and tone. Regardless of what we think we see, all photographs are representations, made up of these parts.”
Support My Vision
To enable the highest quality standard at an affordable price, I am choosing to self-publish my book via a Kickstarter campaign, but I need your help. I need to raise $13,000NZD before 12th September to ensure I can get this project into people’s hands.
Will you help me launch my career as a New Zealand photographer by buying my book on Kickstarter? The price for the book is $55NZD (RRP $70NZD) plus shipping. Shipping will be in December 2022, providing I meet my target (if I don’t, all pledges are refunded).
Go to Kickstarter here to support my Volcanic Aotearoa book.

]]>Have you ever compared digital photography vs film photography, or vice-versa? However, does it even mater because the camera is simply a recording device in the hands of photographer with a creative eye. Over the last 12 month, I have received many questions related to my experiences with medium format film, why I started using medium format digital, what I think of the two mediums, and when will I be using film again. So I thought I would wrap all this up in one blog that touches on what I think of each camera. And, I will tell you why I think my camera is just a tool that I use for me creative project.
For context purposes, I will share with you my experiences in using medium format digital photography vs film photography. I have been using medium format film cameras since 2019. I started with the Mamiya 7, I then moved to the Hasselblad 503cw because I love the 6x6 square format aspect ratio, and then I moved to the Mamiya 6 because it is more travel friendly. My choice to use film might seem a bit backwards because it is an older photography format. However, I saw it as an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of photography. I have travelled all over the North Island of New Zealand with these film cameras to work on my projects.
In 2021, I decided to focus on my photography full time and I wanted to travel more. I know that film photography is difficult to travel with because it is a slow process. There can be many weeks between taking a photo and seeing it on my computer screen. So, I decided to start using a medium format digital camera.
If we compare the technical merits of medium format digital photography vs film photography in isolation, the digital camera is far superior, and it would be ridiculous for me to even suggest otherwise.
If we compare image quality, the only way film can out perform digital is with accurate exposure and focus, and with digitalisation of the film or darkroom print, with a drum scanner.
But, all of this does not mean that one of them is the best camera for you, and I will explain why. Film is slow and there is no instant feedback. It will highlight your creative and technical strengths and weaknesses quickly. You have to build experience and rely on your confidence. Film and developing it is expensive. The cameras are old, parts and repairers are hard to find. To get good quality images you have to buy the best lenses and “mint condition” is expensive.
However, some film cameras hold or increase in value. Film is not ideal for travelling photographers because it is slow and airport security scanning can damage the film. A high quality scanner is required to produce excellent digital files.
Digital is more efficient and has less risk. The upfront cost is high. It is easy to check previews but is not required unless shooting at slow shutter speeds. The RAW files are better quality.
So which do I think is better?
Well, I think the digital camera is better for me whilst I am travelling lots and I am trying to establish my photography business. The cost and risk of film doesn’t make sense for me unless I need film on a project for a specific reason.
But that doesn’t mean digital is better for you. Before buying into a digital medium format system, it is essential that you are producing photographs that you are happy with, with your current camera system.
You must have crafted you minds eye into something that you like. You have to transition your photography from simply recording the scene into abstracting the scene with a wider creative vision. The digital medium format camera will not give this to you.
You see, the thing is, any camera is simply a recording device without the creative input from you. If you have the mindset that you are not getting the photos you want because of your camera, I recommend you have a think about the purpose of your photography. Spend some time thinking about your creatively skills. Because, I think you will find that your money will be better spent on learning how to develop your minds eye by going on workshops, having mentoring sessions, buying inspirational books, and travelling to new places.
If you are the sort of person that is not afraid of failure and can learn from you own mistakes, a medium format film camera will help you become a better photographer. You will develop a better understanding of exposure and depth of field. Plus, working with film is expensive and it will force you to think about things differently. Your compositions will improve quicker.
Film photography is a slow process because you do not get to see your photos until the film has been developed. Your mistakes are only visible after you have left your photography location and your film had been developed. So, as you make these mistakes, you learn about them later, and then you start to think about what you need to do differently before your next photography trip. Because of this, I am convinced that my technical and creative knowledge of photography would not be what it is today. Film photography will help you build confidence in your photography.
When I started using a digital camera, it took some time to get comfortable with how my camera worked. However, I very quickly started to appreciate its technology, and I find that I am photographing more portfolio worthy photos every time I use it. But, this is because I have a deeper understanding of photography, which I learnt from using film. I worked with medium format film cameras or three years to make this book.
The thing is, I want you to have the same understanding, so if you do not have any experience using a film camera, then I recommend you buy a cheap one and give it a go. Start to learn how to use it, it will teach you things that todays digital cameras automate. If you can make great photos with a film camera then your digital work will be even better, and more efficient.
Recently, I have had questions about when will I be using my film camera again, and people have told me that they are unsubscribing because I am using a digital camera. Or, people ask me what camera, lens and settings I use. Sometimes, I feel like people believe that the camera is more important than the photographer. That the camera its lens and the settings somehow produce pleasing results on their own.
When we buy cameras, we go through the motion of unpacking it, reading the manual and becoming familiar with how to use it. Every camera manual that I have read includes technical information about the camera and it includes technical illustrations to help you navigate the camera.
Camera manuals do not offer any creative guidance and as photographers we have to discover the difference between simply recording the scene and abstracting the scene with a wider creative vision by ourselves. But, it takes time to realise this. For the first few years of your creative journey, when you are not seeing the results you hoped for, it is normal to blame your camera, or the settings you used.
Eventually, your reflection will turn onto yourself. You will start to reflect on how you have used your camera, or if you have a good creative vision for your photos, and if your photos are aligned with your creative vision. Eventually, your photography will transition from simply recording the scene into abstracting the scene with a wider creative vision.
My creative visions remain the same regardless of the camera I use and I want you to start thinking the same way. You see, the thing is, any camera is simply a recording device without the creative input from you.
I want you to be more than just a photographer because in todays world everyone carries a smart phone that is capable of taking good photos, so most people consider themselves a photographer. So ask yourself, how can you set your self apart from everyone with a smartphone? Leave a comment below.
The way I think about my cameras is this. My film camera slows me down because I have to work harder to get the results I want, and I am limited to the 6x6 square crop of my Mamiya 6. My digital camera makes my photography more efficient because I get more portfolio worthy photos over the same period and I have more aspect ratio flexibility.
But, none of my cameras give me better creative visions. My creative visions must develop continually with experimentation and reflection. I identify a project that I want to do, then I decide how I am going to do it, and I pick the appropriate tools.
Sometimes these project happen by accident, for example I have been enjoying my recent panoramic photos and I will make a panoramic book that captures the grand landscape of New Zealand.
I am developing another project that focuses on abstract landscapes but I do not yet know how this project will unfold. I want you to start thinking the same way. I want you to have creative visions that include many photos that tell a story. And this is important because it will help you become a better photographer, because your work will start to have more meaning and it will stand out from other photographers.

The medium format digital camera is awesome for panoramic landscape photography. In todays video, I share with you my landscape photos from my fifth day on New Zealand's South Island. This is part of a series of videos that take me on a multi day journey with the Fujifilm GFX 50sII. The spirit of the journey is adventure and to experience new challenges. It follows the mountains in New Zealand South Island to photograph glaciers.
The Fujifilm GFX cameras have many aspect ratios to choose from, and one of them is 65 x 24. All the photos from this day were taken using the 65 x 24 aspect ratio, which provides the same aspect ratio 17 x 6 film cameras.
I find that this aspect ratio works well for New Zealand panormaic landscape photography. Perhaps this is because of the amount of time I had in each area, and that my usual square format photos are more suited to intimate style photos, which take longer to discover. However, I do like the look of the 65 x 24 aspect ratio and I think they will do well in future print sales.
