New Zealand Landscape Photography Artwork by Stephen Milner
I visited Kuirau Park in Rotorua on a cool spring morning and I remember being amazed with the amount of steam that was rising out of its geothermal activity. The temperatures were cool until I approached this geothermal pool. I remember the steam would intensify at random times and it was condensing on my camera lens. I spent one hour walking around Kuirau Park whilst thinking how fascinating it was, but also complex to photograph because of its colours and textures. Then, I realised I could use the steam to simplify what I was seeing. I found the remains of a plant close to the edge the pool and I spent 20 minutes watching the steam to work out how I could photograph it moving around the plant.
Life in geothermal activity is limited to unique collections of plants, animals and micro-organisms. Anything that cannot withstand the high temperatures, acidity and alkalinity, turbidity, and toxicity will struggle to survive. Kuirau Park is located in the centre of Rotorua, New Zealand and it has lots of geothermal activity. This photo was taken with my Mamiya 6 medium format film camera and Ilford Pan F Plus film.
