Mitre Peak stands in Milford Sound, deep in Fiordland on the south west of New Zealand's South Island. It rises around 1,683 metres almost directly out of the water, which is what gives the fiord its dramatic, enclosed feel and makes the peak one of the most photographed in the country. Milford Sound is famous for its moody weather, and the magic here is stillness. When the water goes calm, the peak and sky mirror cleanly in the surface, doubling the composition. In black and white, the eye is drawn to the shape of the mountain and the balance of the reflection rather than to colour, which is why the monochrome treatment suits this scene so well.
