Black and white photography of the Southern Alps captures New Zealand's highest mountains, Aoraki Mount Cook, the great dividing ranges and the Tasman Glacier, in monochrome. Stephen Milner is a New Zealand fine art photographer who sells these black and white prints as limited and open editions, made to order and shipped worldwide.
The Southern Alps run the length of the South Island, a wall of rock, ice and snow that makes its own weather. Aoraki Mount Cook, the highest peak in the country, stands at the centre of it. At this scale colour is almost beside the point. What matters is the shape of a ridge, the tone of cloud against rock, and the texture of ice and snow. Taking the colour away leaves those things, and the feeling of standing in front of something far bigger than yourself.
The great ranges
From a distance the Alps become layer upon layer of ridgeline. Endless Ranges, Southern Alps, The Great Divide, Southern Alps and Crown of Cloud, Southern Alps are about that vastness.
Aoraki Mount Cook
Closer in, the peaks take over the frame. Mueller's Last Light, Mount Cook National Park and The Mirror Peak, Mount Cook are from the country around the mountain.
Ice
The glaciers are the Alps in slow motion. Rivers of Ice, Southern Alps and Frozen Highway, Tasman Glacier follow the ice down from the tops.
