In 2018 my image of Mount Ngauruhoe was chosen as the winner of the landscape category in the Auckland Camera Centre photo competition.
Thank you to the Auckland Camera Centre and to judge Talman Madsen for selecting the photograph. Ngauruhoe, the classic volcanic cone of the Central Plateau, has long been one of my favourite subjects.
The mountain sits within Tongariro National Park and is instantly recognisable for its near perfect symmetry. Photographing it well takes patience, waiting for the right light and clear conditions on the plateau, so a category win here was a welcome reward for the many trips it took to make the image. Recognition like this, early in my journey, gave me the confidence to keep pursuing landscape photography seriously and to return to these mountains again and again through the seasons.
