In 2022 I was named a finalist in the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year Awards, in the Built Environment category.
My photograph of the solar salt works at Lake Grassmere was chosen as a finalist. The finalist exhibition ran in Auckland, and the selected images were also displayed on billboards in locations around the country, which was a wonderful way to see the work reach a wider audience.
The New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year is one of the most respected photography awards in the country, so to be recognised in the Built Environment category, a step away from my usual pure landscapes, was both a surprise and a privilege. It reminded me that a strong image can be found in unexpected places.
